It is no secret that obesity is an epidemic, especially with children and the preteen teen group. More in industrialized countries, but spreading fast to other areas where fast food has become increasingly the choice.

 

Too much processed food, lack of exercise and bad eating and snacking habits have been laying the foundation for an overweight America, specially among the young.

 

Obesity can present challenges for the child in the future. In addition to a higher risk of obesity in adulthood, childhood obesity is the leading cause of pediatric hypertension; it is associated with Type II diabetes mellitus and increases the risk of heart disease. If obesity is marked it can lead to lower self-esteem, and affect relationships with friends and family.

 

When a Child or adolescent has sign of overweight, the target should be to educate other than a weight los program. The child will grow into his body weight over a period of months and have healthier habits. It is easier to modify habits as a child or young teenager than when adulthood sets in.

 

What to do?

 

  1. Encourage physical activity : Become more active to burn fat. It does not have to be a formal program, go out and play, run, swim, be part of a team at school or community. Encourage children to play and stay active instead of watching TV or doing computer time.).
  2. Eat a Balanced diet (for the whole family) : Preach with example and make better choice for the family. Buy healthy foods and snack and forget about prepackaged or high calorie foods, encourage kids and all family to snack on veggies and fruit. Switch to whole grains and lean proteins. Reduce fats and empty carbohydrates. Drink water instead of soda. Be creative.
