What is protein and why is it so important?   by Ana

Our Bodies need protein everyday; it is one of the major nutrients found in our bodies, second only to water. Our body cannot produce protein; therefore it needs to be given to the organism by eating it.

Proteins are made from amino acids; they are literally the building blocks of our bodies. Amino acids are very vast in nature, when a protein contains all of the amino acids; it is called a complete protein. Animal proteins are considered to be complete and therefore the most effective for the development of the body. Most of the vegetable source proteins are considered incomplete since they lack some of the amino acids.

If you are a vegetarian in order to complete your intake of protein you might have to combine two incomplete vegetable proteins in order to get a whole, the most classic example is the Latin-American classic of rice and beans in which both proteins they complement each other and make a whole.

Soy protein is an exception to the rule and it is the only vegetable protein that it is complete.

The primary function of protein is that of building and repairing muscle tissue. You need protein in order to create lean muscle mass in your body; not consuming enough protein will make your body fat and flabby. You will lose muscle tone, feel a lack of energy and start deteriorating.

Other body functions need proteins in order to work properly some of them are the hormonal system, immune system and the creation of red cells.

Protein is as essential as water in our bodies, without it you would not grow or develop properly, without protein your cells would not regenerate and you would not be able to heal your body or repair after an illness. It is extremely important for growing children.

Protein is found essentially in animal sources like fish, meat, poultry, dairy products and eggs. Some vegetable sources include soy, beans, lentils, garbanzos, etc.

Our hectic schedule and lifestyle makes us reach for quick fixes in order to satisfy hunger, but are we really feeding our bodies properly?

Herbalife has developed formula 1 Nutritional shake and Herbalife personalized protein powder, both products deliver the necessary amount of protein needed in a meal, all in a very convenient way.

Mix, shake and enjoy. You do not have to settle for poor nutrition, you can carry Herbalife with you everywhere and enjoy a healthy meal every time all the time.
